Submarine Cable Installation

Activities for Cable Installation

Submarine Cable Landing Work

Submarine cable landing work

An installation of submarine cables is a big project accompanying choice of cable landing places, routes selection for cable laying which needs ocean surveys, and cable laying (cable landing, simultaneous cable burial and laying, cable laying), etc..

Since the installation of Japan Sea submarine coaxial cable (JASC, Naoetsu( Japan)- Nakhodka(Russia)) in 1968, we have achieved to lay more than 50,000 kilometers of cables up to present.
Currently, KCS owns the following major resources, and can widely cope with submarine cable installation from domestic cables to trans-ocean international submarine cables.

Also, KCS has completed recently the cable laying for the earthquake observing system and the burial after laying of the power cable, etc., and can meet customers' various needs in addition to the submarine cable installation.

I. Cable Ships and Facilities

Cable Ships

Two cable ships, the KDDI OCEAN LINK and the KDDI CABLE INFINITY will engage in the submarine cable installation.

KDDI OCEAN LINK

KDDI OCEAN LINK

Can lay about a 4,000Km cable per one voyage. The ship is equipped with a dynamic positioning system which is necessary for stable and precise cable laying, cable engines(drum and linear type) and cable tanks with enough capacity which enables long-haul cable laying. The ship can lay long-distance optical submarine cables.

KDDI CABLE INFINITY

Can lay about a 4,000Km cable per one voyage. Like the KDDI OCEAN LINK, the ship is equipped with a dynamic positioning system, cable engines and cable tanks with enough capacity which enables long-haul cable laying. The ship can lay long-distance optical submarine cables.

Facilities for Submarine Cable Laying, Burials, and Marine Surveys

KCS operates PLOW-II(a towed type deep burial system), MARCAS-IV and MARCAS-V (MARCAS-IV and MARCAS-V are remotely operated vehicles, ROV), as facilities for submarine cable construction and maintenance.

ROV MARCAS-V

ROV MARCAS-V

Is used in case that PLOW-II can't be used, or burial cables are re-buried after repairs. The KDDI PACIFIC LINK is equipped with MARCAS-V.

ROV MARCAS-IV

ROV MARCAS-IV

Is used in the same manner as MARCAS-V. MARCAS-IV has higher power than MARCAS-III. The KDD OCEAN LINK is equipped with MARCAS-IV.

Cable Plow System, PLOW-II

Cable Burying Machine PLOW-II

Is towed by the cable ship, and used for simultaneous operation of cable laying and burial with a 300 HP water jetting to a depth of 3 m and capable of installing cable, cable splice boxes and repeaters to depths of 1,500 m.

II. Technology

(1)Technology for submarine cable laying and burials
(2)Jointing technology for submarine cables
(3)Marine survey engineering

III. Human Resources

In KCS, many staffs with expertise in submarine cable constructions are working for submarine cable installations.
They are always innovating themselves in order to enhance their technologies through company's programs, that is, training in or outside the company or OJT in accumulated know-how in the company.
